Obituary for Ray T. Smith

Ray T. Smith, 97 of Louisburg, Kansas passed away April 28, 2019 at Del Mar Gardens in Overland Park, Kansas. Cremation, with Celebration of Life services 2:00 pm Saturday, May 4, 2019 at Mullinax Funeral Home, Drexel Chapel (660-679-0009). Friends may gather from 1:00 pm to 2:00 pm prior to the service, also at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, the family suggest contributions be made to the H.T. Smith Community Park c/o the City of Drexel. Messages of condolence may be left for the family at www.mullinaxfuneralhome.com.

Ray Thomas Smith was born September 15, 1921 in New Lancaster, Kansas to H.T. and Hattie Knepp Smith. He graduated from Paola High School in 1939. Following graduation he attended Kansas State University for one and a half years before entering the US Army during WWII. Returning from the the war, he found California to be home. Ray traveled North America selling Euclid Construction Equipment in the 1940s, and Caterpillar at Shepard Tractor in Los Angeles in the 1950s. While in California, he married and two children were born, Susan and Dennis.
Returning to Drexel in 1964 he joined the family business with H.T. Smith and sister Mary Guey until it ceased operation in 1977. In 1970 he was united in marriage to Wilma Harris Purdon, creating a great upbringing for children Michelle and Greg. Their marriage flourished for 49 wonderful years. After the family business closed, Ray worked for Deems Farm Machinery in Butler and Nevada, Missouri until he retired in 1984.
Ray was preceded in death by his parents, son Dennis Smith, grandson Geoff Craig, daugher Michelle Purdon, sister Muriel Berry, and nephew Eddie Geuy. He is survived by his wife Wilma Smith of Louisburg, KS., son Greg Purdon and wife Missy of Louisburg, KS., granddaughters, Sarah and Sophia Purdon, daughter Susan Craig and husband Frank of Hawaii, granddaughter Jennifer Rutt and husband Ryan of Hawaii, and great-grandchildren, Carlei Rutt, and Elijah and Ruby Craig, along with his sister Mary Guey and husband Sody of Belton, MO.,
