Mary Elizabeth Oakes was born October 3, 1925 in Detroit, Michigan to Paul and Carlie Howard Linville. She graduated from Butler High School and was united in marriage to Jerry Lee Oakes on June 25, 1946. Mary was a long time member of the Bulter First Baptist Church.
Mary loved her family and always enjoyed seeing them, especially the little ones. She also enjoyed spending holidays and special occasions with the Billy Moore family through the years.
Anyone who knew Mary, knew that her passion in life was her art. She was quite the accomplished artist. Mary owned and operated her own art studio in Butler, teaching lessons locally and in Kansas City. She attended art shows around the area, selling many of her pieces. Mary would often be commissioned to design custom pieces for customers. As a member of the Butler Art Guild and the Art Guild of Greater Kansas City, she took her art seriously. Even traveling to Sweden for special lessons and to enjoy all the beauty the country has to offer. Art was Mary’s absolute delight!
Mary was preceded in death by husband Jerry Oakes, mother Carlie Jewett, step-father Homer Jewett, sister Gladys Evans, brother-in-law Arthur Evans, father and mother-in-law Farmer and Ruby Oakes, and nephew Jimmy Evans. She is survived by her son Mitchell F. Oakes and wife Karen of Butler, MO., two grandsons, Jason Oakes and wife Michelle of Butler, MO., and Brandon Oakes and wife Katie of Navarre, FL., four great-grandchildren, Braden Jerry, Ryland Isaiah, of Butler, MO., and Macy Belle and Holden Tyler of Navarre, FL., brother Howard Linville and wife Millie of Phoenix, AZ., five nieces and several cousins.
