Obituary for Virginia Steinbeck

Virginia Jean (Wood) Steinbeck, longtime resident of Butler, Missouri passed away June 12, 2017 in Rolla, Missouri. Graveside funeral services will be 2:00 PM Wednesday, June 14, 2017 in Oak Hill Cemetery in Butler. Visitation will be prior to services from 12:30 – 1:30 PM at Mullinax Funeral Home (660-679-0009) in Butler. Memorial contributions are suggested to the Butler Public Library.

Virginia was born on June 5, 1929 in Wright City, Missouri, the only child of Roi S. Wood and Adalee Edwards Wood. Virginia had fond memories of her childhood in Eagleville and Pierce City, Missouri. Virginia later moved to Butler during her junior high years and then to Joplin when her father accepted the position of superintendent of Joplin Schools.

Virginia graduated from Joplin High School in the class of 1947. During her junior year of high school in Joplin, Virginia met the love of her life, Robert Gene (Bob) Steinbeck, who had returned from service in the Army Air Corps during World War II. Virginia attended Joplin Junior College before graduating from the University of Missouri in 1950. At MU, she was a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority. Upon her graduation from MU, Virginia and Bob were married on August 13, 1950. They began their married life in Butler, MO where Bob was employed by the Culver-Underwood Funeral Home and Virginia began her career as a teacher in the Butler Public Schools. Virginia received her Master’s in Education from UMKC in 1979. She believed in education and loved teaching children. Virginia taught school for 37 years in Butler, with the first sixteen in the 4th grade and the last 21 years in kindergarten. Virginia and Bob enjoyed 41 years of marriage before his death in 1991.

Virginia was a dedicated educator, a devoted wife and a loving mother, grandmother and great- grandmother. Her family was her pride and joy and she was proud of all of their accomplishments. Virginia was a member of the Butler Presbyterian Church, and Chapter HV of P.E.O. She enjoyed reading and visiting with friends over numerous cups of coffee. Virginia also enjoyed the company of her constant companion, her Yorkshire Terrier, Meggie.

Virginia is survived by her daughter, Susan Steinbeck Bowles and husband, Stephen (Steve) Bowles, of Rolla, Missouri and her son Robert Gene (Robb) Steinbeck, Junior and wife, Allison McNeil Steinbeck of Lee’s Summit, Missouri; five perfect grandchildren, Jeremy Stephen Bowles and wife Jacqueline (Jacquie), and Joshua Steinbeck Bowles, all of Columbia, Missouri, Jennifer Susan Bowles of St. Louis, Missouri, Caylee McNeil Steinbeck and Robert Jack Steinbeck, both of Lee’s Summit, Missouri. Virginia also had two great-grandchildren, Griffin Stephen Bowles and Balor Jackson Bowles both of Columbia, Missouri.
