Maggie was born September 7, 1937 in Mapleton, Kansas, daughter of Glen Filmore and Nellie May (Chaney) Lay. She graduated from Fulton High School in 1962, and was married to James A. McMillin on November 4, 1976.

Maggie loved being a mother to her three children, her granddaughter and great-granddaughters. She never met a stranger, and was a surrogate mother and grandmother to many. Her home was always open to one and all. Maggie’s home was always the “place to be” as it was often full of her kids, her friends, her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.

She was also a talented artist who enjoyed painting, crafting, sewing, quilting, and gardening. Auctions and garage sales were her thing – her van braked at every garage sale sign! A great day for Maggie would start with her and Jim getting a Hardee’s biscuit to split, a coffee, and heading to the river in Fulton. Maggie also loved working at her store in Butler for many years.

Maggie was an Eastern Star member who recently received her 60-year pin. She always tried to make it to the Fulton alumni gatherings because she enjoyed them so much. Maggie was a very special soul and will be loved and missed by all that were lucky enough to have been a part of her life.

Maggie was preceded in death by her husband, Jim McMillin; son David Carrel; sister Dorothy Irwin; as well as her parents, Glen and Nellie Lay. She is survived by her daughter, Kimberly Carrel and son-in-law Terry Murphy; son Larry Carrel; granddaughter Jennifer Evans and husband Chris Evans; two great-granddaughters Madi and Meredith Evans; sister Judy Smith and husband Granville; sister Betty Guilfoyle and husband Bernard; brother Robert Lay and wife Delores; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews. She was a mother and grandmother to all of them.
